Speech and Language Pathologists offer assessment and therapy for various communication and oral motor disorders. Common areas assessed include: speech (e.g. articulation, apraxia), language, stuttering, oral motor (e.g. tongue thrust, mouth posture), voice, social interaction and play skills.

Therapy is provided through direct therapy or parent coaching. playTOK areas of specialty include: pediatric speech and language, Hanen training, PROMPT for motor speech, orofacial myofunctional therapy, and more.


Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapists evaluate and treat disorders of oral motor structure and function. Common concerns include: open mouth posture, tongue thrust, habitualmouth breathing, disordered chewing or swallowing and temporomandibular disorders.

Therapy is provided to maximize oral motor function.

Occupational Therapy (OT) is a profession devoted to enabling participation in daily living skills. Areas of self-care, leisure, and productivity may be addressed as part of an OT treatment plan. For children, their occupation is often considered "play". Optimizing function is a key element to successful therapy, whereby goals pertain to practical skills and activities that are performed on a daily basis.

Signs That OT May Be Appropriate
If a child has difficulty with any of the following, they may be appropriate for occupational therapy:
FINE MOTOR skills (i.e. not using both hands together, poor pencil grasp, illegible handwriting)
SELF HELP skills (i.e. cannot independently dress him/herself, poor personal hygiene, messy when eating)
ORGANIZATION (i.e. keeping track of his/her materials, unable to maintain a tidy locker or desk, organizing work on paper)
FEEDING (i.e. cannot tolerate certain textures, picky eater)
SENSORY PROCESSING (i.e. avoids touching certain textures, bothered by loud noises)

Janice is a registered speech-language pathologist with over 15 years of experience in pediatric speech and language. Janice studied at the University of Toronto (Master of Health Science in Speech Language Pathology). She is registered with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO), Speech-Language and Audiology Canada (SAC) and Ontario Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists(OSLA).

Janice is excited to offer private speech and language services in English and Cantonese. In addition to private, she worked for many years for a public Children’s Children’s Treatment Centre (e.g., Ontario Preschool Speech and Language Program, Infant Hearing Auditory-Verbal Program, Preschool Outreach Program) within a multi-disciplinary team. She currently continues to work in the public setting for the Ontario Preschool Speech and Language Program.

Janice has supported children with a wide range of pediatric communication concerns (e.g., language, auditory verbal learning, articulation, motor speech, social communication, and emergent literacy). Within her private practice, Janice is passionate about motor speech, oral motor development and orofacial myofunctional therapy.

Janice is knowledgeable in various approaches: - Augmentative and Alternative Communication (Core vocabulary and “Picture Exchange Communication System” (PECS)) - Early Language Hanen Training (It Takes Two to Talk, More Than Words, ABC & Beyond, Learning Language & Loving It, Target Word, I’m Ready). - Motor Speech - Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets (PROMPT, Level 1 & II) - Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (Various) - Auditory-Verbal Therapy (Level 1&2), - Stuttering (Lidcombe Stuttering Program, provincial Fluency training)

Drawing from experience and evidence-based practice, she seeks to understand each child/family/daycare educator’s unique needs.
